Guns & Rain is a Johannesburg-based contemporary African art gallery with a busy and exciting local and international programme of exhibitions, fairs and other projects. They are seeking a dynamic, self-motivated and collaborative individual to join their team as Gallery Manager. The ideal candidate will possess a blend of excellent organisational and project management skills, and a passion for the arts, especially in developing and growing awareness about African art locally and globally. • Act as a liaison between artists, clients, and the public, fostering positive relationships and promoting engagement with their gallery.
  • Demonstrate exceptional interpersonal skills, effectively communicating (verbally and in writing) with team members, artists, clients, and visitors to create a welcoming and inclusive environment.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding and appreciation of art, as well as motivation to keep learning, capable of providing insightful critiques and guidance to artists and patrons.
  • Take initiative in problem-solving and decision-making, responding promptly to evolving situations and ensuring smooth operations at all times, including during events and exhibitions.
  • Execute a wide range of tasks with efficiency, professionalism and attention to detail, from administrative desk duties to physical labour such as packing, unpacking, and installation.
  • Maintain a high level of energy and physical fitness, as the role will often involve activities such as lifting heavy objects, climbing ladders, and transporting artwork.
  • Display a positive and can-do attitude, contributing to a collaborative and supportive work culture.
  • Assume a leadership role within the team, providing guidance, mentorship, and direction as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Commerce, Art History, Fine Arts, Arts Administration, or related field preferred, but other backgrounds are welcome.
  • Previous experience in gallery management or a similar role within the arts industry useful but not essential.
  • Small business experience of any kind is an advantage, as is demonstration of entrepreneurial flair.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with a natural ability and interpersonal skills to engage with diverse audiences and stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in logistics management, including shipping, packing, and handling of artwork.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • High energy and ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends, especially during peak events and exhibitions.

Benefits
